England centre-back Harry Maguire has chosen to stay at Manchester United this summer despite a £30m bid from Premier League rivals West Ham United.

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has told Harry Maguire exactly what he must do to stay at the club.

The England centre-back looks certain to leave Old Trafford this summer after Erik ten Hag stripped him of the captain's armband after a season in which he failed to secure a regular starting spot. Despite the club accepting an offer from West Ham United, the 30-year-old has chosen to stay and fight for his place.

Having been frozen out early in the season, injuries to the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez appeared to have thrown the defender a lifeline. He started against Brentford before the international break and assisted on Scott McTominay's stoppage-time goal in United's dramatic 2-1 win.

Berbatov believes Maguire can retain his place with more performances like this while also erasing the mistakes that plagued his form last season. "Harry Maguire had a great performance against Brentford," he told Betfair. "The only thing he can do is stay focused when he gets a chance to perform and not make stupid mistakes."

The former striker, who scored 56 goals in 159 appearances for the club, also believes losing the captain's armband has damaged Maguire's confidence. He urged him to put his ego aside and focus on getting back to his best.

"When he talks, you can see Harry is confident in his abilities," the Bulgarian added. "When he was handed the armband, his confidence grew significantly but so did his ego."

"Now that the captain's armband has been taken away, his pride is bruised. He needs to start over again and rebuild the relationship with the fans. He has the chance to prove that he can handle everything again.

"Perhaps, as we saw in the Beckham documentary, Harry is going through that difficult time now, but hopefully he will eventually find redemption by the end of his film."

Maguire recently revealed that he has contacted David Beckham, who himself has endured difficult times at both Manchester United and England. Berbatov spoke about the recent Netflix series about the Inter Miami boss as an inspiration for Maguire. "Ultimately he can find redemption at the end of his movie," he added.
